Thomas Kyds The Spanish Tragedy is a play about penalize, rotting and love. The conversion of analysis illustrates distributively of these themes through a range of rhetorical techniques such as irony, imagery and antithesis. It also uses structure and stylised verse as a means of characterising the two central figures, Balthazar and Lorenzo. The theme of subversive activity is demonstrated in this particular passing by the plays book of facts antagonist, and Machiavellian villain, Lorenzo. It was his corruption of his sisters servant, Pedrigano that ultimately racecourse to this sequence taking place. His first three wrinkles that open this passage: Why so, tam armis quam ingenio: Where words prevail not, violence prevails eject gold doth more than them both II.i.107-110 instantly characterise Lorenzo as guileful, cowardly and corrupt. They also contain a slight pencil lead of irony, in that it wasnt violence itself that swayed Pedrigano, it was the threat of violence or rather, it wasnt the action that acquired results, it was the words that implied possible action if results werent met. Lorenzo is portrayed throughout most of the play as a character of inaction. He is a man who employs techniques of trickery to grasp out his goals, but never takes direct authoritive action.
In this passage, for example, he subtly persuades Balthazar into seeking revenge on Horatio for taking the lovingness of the fair sex he loves. He thusly uses Balthazars anger and his! own cunning ways to carry out his desired result. Another lineament of Lorenzo is portrayed in the line tam armis quam ingenio (line 107), which shows him to be a well educated and literate man.
